Chapter Eleven

Teddy Bear was safe. The cheese and onion crisp box and its contents were lost but Teddy Bear was here. Ignatius held the worn, matted toy against his cheek and breathed deeply. His thumb went into his mouth and for a few minutes he found peace.

It was a long time since he’d been able to openly enjoy the comfort that Teddy Bear brought. The first time Maxine had seen him cuddling the bear she’d collapsed with laughter and assumed he was having her on. He’d realised then that seeking refuge in his childhood toy was outside the norms of society and he’d dropped Teddy Bear into the crisp box in the wardrobe. But sometimes, when Maxine was elsewhere, he’d sneaked him out again, curled up on the bed and sucked his thumb for half an hour. It made him forget that life and society didn’t always welcome him with open arms.

Now, as he rubbed the matted fur against his skin, tension dropped from his shoulders and his thoughts stopped colliding with one another. He closed his eyes and dozed.

A white van was pulling on to the Vesey Villa forecourt when he awoke. Ignatius put Teddy down and became alert again. He’d been expecting the police. That silly girl from next door had given him poisonous looks as he broke the lock. She must have realised what he was doing. So he’d been as quick as possible inside the flat because blue lights could have arrived at any second. That’s why he hadn’t been able to find the cheese and onion crisp box, even though he’d completely emptied the wardrobe.

To get his hands on it he needed more time in the bedsit and a way of getting in that didn’t draw attention. And there were still other things in the flat that could be useful. There was another tarpaulin in the dust on top of the wardrobe, which would be essential should Maxine’s body need moving again. Heavy rain had been forecast and it might wash topsoil off the hillock and reveal her. If he dug her up, Maxine could be leaking body fluids, or he might need to chop her in half to fit her into a better final resting place. The yellow clinical waste sack was still in his mind. In each of these scenarios a second tarpaulin would be very useful for avoiding spillage.

His passport and driving licence were under the carpet near the fireplace. He didn’t keep them there for secrecy, just so they didn’t get lost. He’d need them to start a new life in a new place. It would be hard leaving Mother, but he wanted to live without watching his back all the time or dreading a newsreader announcing the discovery of Maxine’s body.

The purple leaflet was still on the car dashboard in front of him. A resurrection would mean no dead body to worry about and Maxine could go away with him. Or they could stay here. He picked up the wrinkled paper and wondered if he should dial the number.
